Toyota unveiled its vision for the future of electric SUVs with the introduction of the Urban SUV concept late last year. The production version will serve as Toyota’s entry into the electric vehicle market in India, marking its first foray into electric mobility within the country.

Drawing parallels with the Maruti eVX, Toyota’s Urban SUV concept shares a platform with its Indian counterpart. Scheduled for release around September-October 2025, the production version of the Urban SUV concept is poised to make its debut in Indian showrooms six months after the launch of the Maruti eVX.

Central to the Urban SUV’s design ethos is its utilisation of the 27PL skateboard platform, a modular base that facilitates efficient production and allows for flexible configurations. This platform, manufactured by Maruti Suzuki in India, underscores a commitment to localising production and catering to both domestic and export markets.

In terms of dimensions, the Urban SUV closely aligns with the Maruti eVX, boasting similar proportions and a shared wheelbase of 2700 mm. Both the EVs will get completely different styling as Toyota is likely to offer their new design direction with their upcoming EV. The interior is expected to prioritise spaciousness, comfort and will get a host of new features.

Powering the Urban SUV will be a choice of two battery pack options, catering to varying range preferences. A 60kWh unit, showcased alongside the eVX concept, promises a range of approximately 550 km, while an entry-level variant equipped with a 48kWh battery pack targets around 400 km of range. Additionally, Toyota plans to offer both front-wheel drive (FWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations to cater to diverse market demands.

Upon its launch, the Toyota Urban SUV will enter a competitive landscape within the midsize electric SUV segment, facing off against rivals such as the Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Curvv EV and its own Maruti sibling, the eVX.
