It’s said, there’s no shortcut to success in life. And so is it in business. One has to pay up at some point or the other. It’s been nearly 8 and a half years, but people tracking the automotive industry still remember the emissions scandal involving Volkswagen cars. Also called ‘Dieselgate’, the scandal tarnished VW’s image, and impacted its revenues. It is also said that it contributed to a faster decline of the diesel vehicle market globally.

Another emissions scandal

The ‘Dieselgate’ episode is something that Volkswagen, and the entire industry, would like to forget. However, in a redox of sorts, Toyota Industries, which develops diesel engines for Toyota, is reported to have cheated on certification tests. The world’s largest carmaker, with sales of 11.2 million vehicles in 2023, has a serious clean-up act to do.

Autonomous driving moves to the slow lane?

Talking about safer mobility, Autonomous Driving (AD) technology was pitted as the ultimate solution to the global problem of road accidents, which took away lives of 1.19 million people globally last year. Human error is said to contribute to over 90% of road accidents, but with some road incidents involving driverless cars, there are discussions for fool-proof approaches to make AD a mainstream technology. Some players seem to be losing confidence or patience. Autonomous cars can take longer than what many expected even a couple of years ago.

India’s technology journey towards clean, sustainable mobility

2070 is the target year for India to reach carbon neutrality. In this period, the energy mix of the road transportation sector will see a significant change, with the addition of new options. In the latest episode of Target Net Zero, ETAuto’s Show on carbon neutrality and sustainability, C V Raman, CTO, Maruti Suzuki India, and Chairman, Emission & Conservation Committee,Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, discuss about the new options, including CBG (Compressed Biogas), which found mention in the Interim Budget too last month.
