Launched in January 2024, the colour-coding scheme aimed to regulate the increasing number of e-rickshaws on Lucknow’s roads.

In an effort to enforce regulations and improve traffic management, the Lucknow police initiated a citywide crackdown on unregistered e-rickshaws on Thursday. This action comes after the February 7th deadline set for registration under the new colour-coding scheme.

Throughout the afternoon, over 1,000 challans were issued to drivers operating without proper registration, with fines of INR 2,000 imposed for each violation. Joint commissioner of police (law and order) Upendra Kumar Agarwal confirmed the continuation of the operation, saying, “Checking will persist every day and will be followed by FIINR for repeat offenders.”

Launched in January 2024, the colour-coding scheme aimed to regulate the increasing number of e-rickshaws on Lucknow’s roads.

The mandatory registration process involved police verification, designated routes, and QR code implementation. Despite the distribution of 39,400 forms, only 13,000 completed applications were submitted by the deadline.

Thursday’s enforcement drive saw police inspecting e-rickshaws across various city areas, including Badshahnagar, Bhootnath market, Polytechnic crossing, Hazratganj, Kaiserbagh, and Alambagh. A letter issued by the JCP instructed police stations to verify registration forms or receipts during stops.

Drivers with valid documentation faced no fines, while those without received INR 2,000 challans under section 179 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
